Convocation 2014

August 15 is the last day to respond (and order regalia, with a late fee of $25) regarding your attendance at the Convocation ceremony and all-campus picnic that take place on August 26 at 3:30 p.m. Even if you have your own regalia, we need to know that you plan to attend Convocation (so there will be a seat for you) and/or the picnic (so there will be food for you). Click here to register for convocation.

We encourage you to participate in the academic procession that symbolizes for our talented and enthusiastic new students the community of scholars they have joined. President Hrabowski will address the gathering and Dr. Marie desJardins, Presidential Teaching Professor for 2014-17, will make brief remarks.

Regalia pick-up will take place at the Bookstore beginning August 18. Faculty and staff mustpick up their regalia at the Bookstore by August 22. Faculty and staff are asked to return their regalia to the Bookstore after the ceremony.

LOCATION FOR LINE UP

Faculty and staff are asked to arrive for procession line up no later than 3:00 p.m. The line-up location is the first floor lobby of the University Center (UC). (The UC is located between AC IV and the Meyerhoff Chemistry Bldg.) There will be a table where faculty and staff can leave personal items and a Student Marshal to attend them. However, this will not be in a locked room; for the best security those marching are encouraged to leave valuables in their offices.

After lining up, faculty and staff will lead the procession of new students through campus to the RAC and will welcome them at the doors to Convocation. In order to keep the procession moving and start the ceremony on time, we encourage faculty clapping to welcome the students as they pass by, without stopping to shake hands with them. In case of inclement weather or the threat of it, announcement of an alternative line-up location will be made on the morning of Convocation.

ALL-CAMPUS PICNIC

After Convocation, all faculty and staff are invited to join new and returning students for a free Community Picnic from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m., on the Quad. (Rain location will be the Residence Life Dining Hall.) Please click here to make your reply for the picnic by August 15.

Change of Location for Convocation Ceremony (8/28)

From Philip Rous, Provost & Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs; Tim Nohe, President of the Faculty Senate; Nancy Young, Vice President for Student Affairs; Greg Simmons, Vice President for Institutional Advancement

UMBC’s Convocation Ceremony tomorrow (8/28) must be moved, because the extreme storms over the weekend caused flooding on the basketball court in the RAC. Convocation will now take place in the nearby multipurpose gym in the RAC, which has a more limited capacity.

We will be able to accommodate all our new students and the faculty and staff who have chosen to participate in the processional. We know that some faculty and staff prefer to drop in and watch the ceremony, but unfortunately, this option will not be available in the multipurpose gym. Remote viewing will be available in the lecture hall in Academic IV (Room 003).

For those faculty and staff participating in the processional, the line up is unchanged. Faculty and staff are asked to assemble on the first floor lobby of the University Center by 3 p.m. They will then lead the procession of new students through campus to the RAC and will welcome them at the doors to Convocation. Staff will be on hand to direct the processional into the new location in the multipurpose gym. The ceremony will begin at 3:30 p.m. (In case of inclement weather or the threat of it, an announcement of an alternative line-up location would be made tomorrow morning.)

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to welcome our new students while adjusting for unforeseen circumstances beyond our control. Thank you.
