World AIDS Day Awareness and Recognition Begins (11/26-11/30)

With this year’s World AIDS Day approaching on December 1st, the Office of Student Life’s Mosaic Center, University Health Services, and the UMBC Women’s Center have announced a partnership which aims to raise awareness and education about HIV/Aids, beginning today, November 26th, through November 30th.

Events for the week include:

-Free & Confidential Rapid HIV Testing on November 27th & 28th, from 10am – 4pm in     The Commons, Room 329.

An HIV/AIDS Brown Bag Discussion on November 27th, from 10am – 11am in the Women’s Center.

-The World AIDS Day Health Fair on November 27th, held from 11am – 1pm, on The Commons Main Street.

UMCP’s David Newburn to Lecture on Development in the Baltimore Area (11/30)

The Center for Urban Environmental Research and Education (CUERE) welcomes Dr. David Newburn, Assistant Professor of Agriculture and Resource Economic at the University of Maryland, College Park as guest for the seminar “Residential Development in the Baltimore Region” this Friday, November 30th.

The seminar is the latest for CUERE’s Fall 2012 Seminar Series, which has been held annually since 2003. It begins at 2 PM in Room 206 of the Technology Research Center, and is free and open to the public.

Show-and-Tell Hybrid Learning Presentation (11/29)

Faculty in the Winter 2013 Alternate Delivery Program will present the second of two required show-and-tell hybrid learning presentations that address the pedagogical problems (or implications) a hybrid or online course solves (or creates).

If you’re interested in learning more about hybrid courses, this is a great way to see how faculty in a variety of disciplines (POLI, SOCY) are preparing for their Winter 2013 courses. Feel free to bring your lunch; refreshments (drinks/desserts) will be provided for registered participants.

Rutgers-Newark’s Karina Schäfer Lectures on “Urban, Naturally Assembled Brownfield Forest” (11/09)

The Center for Urban Environmental Research and Education (CUERE) welcomes Dr. Karina V.R. Schäfer, Assistant Professor of Ecosystem Ecology at Rutgers University-Newark, as guest for the seminar “Canopy Carbon Net Assimilation of an Urban, Naturally Assembled Brownfield Forest” this Friday, November 9th.

Last Minute Election Talk (10/30)

UMBC’s Women’s Center will be hosting a last-minute election talk from 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm on October 30th.

Topics such as referendum questions, seat information, and the overall importance of voting in Maryland will be covered. In a statement, the Women’s Center encourages anyone interested to come with any questions or concerns they have for “an open, judgment free conversation about the election… we can try to answer the questions you have!  There is only one week left, it’s time to figure out where you stand!”

Arizona State’s Chris Boone Lectures on Baltimore Ecology Issues (11/02)

The Center for Urban Environmental Research and Education (CUERE) welcomes  Dr. Christopher Boone, Senior Sustainability Scientist and Associate Dean of Arizona State University’s School of Sustainability, as guest for the seminar “Urban Sustainability and Environmental Justice in Baltimore” this Friday, November 2nd.

Film Showing at the Women’s Center (11/5-9)

The Women’s Center will be showing a film the week of November 5 which deals with the stereotypes regarding disability in contemporary society.

The Alice Elliott-directed documentary Body and Soul: Diana and Kathy tells the story of two women dealing with issues of disability (Diana with Down’s syndrome, and Kathy with cerebral palsy). Diana serves as caregiver to Kathy through the course of the film, and model a grand experiment in in-dependent living,” according to the synopsis provided by the center.

The length of Body and Soul: Diana and Kathy runs to 40 minutes. Showtimes are as follows:

VCU’s Qin Wang Speaks at Stat Colloquium (10/26)

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics hosts Dr. Qin Wang of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) for its Fall 2012 Statistics Colloquium this Friday, October 26, from 11am to 12pm in Room 401 of the Mathematic and Psychology (MP) building.

Dr. Wang’s contribution for this week is entitled “A general SDR approach via Hellinger integral of order two.” It deals with the concept of sufficient dimension reduction (SDR), which according to the abstract is “a useful tool to study the dependence between a response and a multidimensional predictor.” The focus will be on a new approach to SDR called the Hellinger Integral of order two, a collaboration between Wang and Drs. Xiangrong Yin at University of Georgia and Frank Critchley at The Open University of UK, and which has a number of advantages such of minimal assumptions, relative effiency, and its unitary aspects of previous methodologies, among others.
